I received this book for free from Author, MTMC Tours in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

The fae abandoned this world to us. And the ones with power rule.

Gold.

Gold floors, gold walls, gold furniture, gold clothes. In Highbell, in the castle built into the frozen mountains, everything is made of gold.

Even me.

King Midas rescued me. Dug me out of the slums and placed me on a pedestal. I’m called his precious. His favored. I’m the woman he Gold-Touched to show everyone that I belong to him. To show how powerful he is. He gave me protection, and I gave him my heart. And even though I don’t leave the confines of the palace, I’m safe.

Until war comes to the kingdom and a deal is struck.

Suddenly, my trust is broken. My love is challenged. And I realize that everything I thought I knew about Midas might be wrong.

Because these bars I’m kept in, no matter how gilded, are still just a cage. But the monsters on the other side might make me wish I’d never left.

The myth of King Midas reimagined. This compelling adult fantasy series is as addictive as it is unexpected. With romance, intrigue, and danger, the gilded world of Orea will grip you from the very first page.

Please Note: This book contains explicit content and darker elements, including mature language, violence, and non-consensual sex. It is not intended for anyone under 18 years of age. This is book one in a series.

What to expect from Gild?

It’s been a while since I’ve read a King Midas retelling (more like in YEARS) and it’s such a fascinating Greek myth. A quick run down on the myth: King Midas is a myth about a man who wishes that everything he touches is turned to gold. And as the tale follows, this eventually becomes a tragedy, for turning everything to gold is not a blessing, but rather a curse.

Gild is a compelling dark fantasy retelling on the King Midas myth following Auren who was gold-touched by King Midas. Her story is heartbreaking as she tries to navigate a life in a literal gilded cage, surviving upon lies that she twists for the sake of her own sanity. As a result, she’s his most “prized” posession. Auren does not truly mind being on a literal gilded cage, she only yearns for his attention out of gratitude and by thinking that King Midas loves her above everything, for King Midas saved her from a life much worse when she was younger.

This is certainly a story about a main character with Stockholm Syndrome. Auren faces abuse and is used as a tool, a gilded possesion, rather than a human. King Midas is not the hero of the story, he is a man full of greed and avarice, someone who uses his power to turn everything into gold for his own gain. He might have once saved Auren from a terrible fate, but that hero is long gone, replaced by a monster that puts Auren in dangerous situations just for his political gain. It’s only by sheer luck that Auren does not face even more sexual abuse/rape (though emotionally, she is far from safe).

There is so much more to Auren (who has a lovely spirit) and I was 100% rooting for her every time she would come to realize she was worth more than gold. She craves for companionship and for a place where she can be free. As the story progresses, we get to learn more about her own place in this world descended from the fae and old magic, including the meaning behind her “ribbons”. It sets for an exciting twist towards the next book in the series and I look forward to her growth and, hopefully, for her triumph over every struggle she has faced.
