Meeting place: The Frosted Ball.
What follows: Chaos. Noisy ballrooms. Starry skies. White flurries. Hungry kisses. Haughty stares. Frozen lakes. Shaking breaths. The truth. Finally.
Frosted is a heart-wrenching romance about a pirate and an ice-cold lady who seem to have hated each other for years, inspired by winter-themed fairytales like The Snow Queen and The Steadfast Tin Soldier. It is set in a witty, glittering Regency world made up of a little bit of Jane Austen, a little bit of Georgette Heyer, and a lot of a modern heart yearning for romance, passion and a tall gentleman with a smoldering gaze. This is a broken tale of beauty, dark secrets and love lost.

What to expect from Frosted?

It’s been a long time since I picked up a book set in the Regency era and honestly, after picking up Frosted, I realized that I’ve missed reading about it. (Also must confess I saw Bridgerton earlier this month and absolutely loved it, so I was definitely already in the mood for it!)

And see, what excites me so much about Frosted, and the Regency Retold series in general, is that it retells fairytales or classics in the Regency era which is England in the early 1800s. In the case of Frosted, it is inspired by “winter-themed fairytales like The Snow Queen and The Steadfast Tin Soldier” + add a dash of Jane Austen and it’s pretty much the perfect recipe for a good novel!

As soon as I opened this book I was pulled straight into the wonder of the Frosted Ball & the ache/longing of the main characters, Lady Stella DeWinter and Captain Vaughn (a Privateer). Their heart ache and resentment over their former relationship was undeniable. The reason why Stella breaks off their engagement without telling Vaughn why is one of the main storylines of this book, and we get to piece together their past selves while simultaneously seeing the contrast of who they are in the present. Honestly, both characters were great and it was a bit sad to see them suffering (though they reconnect fairly quickly as they begin to discover each other’s secrets!)

Must also note that this book also covers the Regency society itself, which is not easy to navigate at all! Gossip is always front and center, and most often cruel towards women. Stella avoided coming out into society for years in order to not face their scrutiny, which did not deter most from saying vile things about her. I really felt sad she had to go through this. though I am glad she was surrounded by people who cared for her, even in Vaughn’s absence.

Oh, but don’t for a second think this is a sad story. Yes, there is a bit of heartbreak and anger, but it’s also glittering with second-chance romance and fun personalities! With witty, sharp dialogue and lovers-to-enemies-to-lovers romance (a fave trope), this regency retold novel with fairytale vibes is one not to miss!

Which Regency Retold novel should you read first?

Did you know that the Regency Retold series can be read as standalone novels? This means you do not have to read Ruined in order to read Frosted (this is technically book 2 in the series). You can of course read them in order, however, I thought it would be fun to do a quiz to determine which one is more your style and, if undecided, then maybe this will help you decide which one to read first!

About M.C. Frank

M.C. Frank (writer, reader, designer, physicist and teacher, to name a few) has been living in a world of stories ever since she can remember (that's before she knew how to write). She started writing them down when she could no longer stand the characters in her head screaming at her to give them life, and while those first scribblings weren't exactly good (nor were they books, although she insisted on calling them that), they were enough for her to discover her passion in life.
She got her university degree in physics a few years ago (yes, she's like Sheldon, only a bit crazier!) and is now free to pursue her love of reading and writing, as well her free-lance job as editor-in-chief. She lives with her 'dude' in a home filled with candles, laptops and notebooks, where she rearranges her overflowing bookshelves every time she feels stressed.
Which is often, since (as you might have noticed) she doesn't pick the easiest subjects for her novels.
