In Mansi Shah’s stunning debut novel, a family tragedy beckons a first-generation immigrant to the city of her birth, where she grapples with her family’s past in search of where she truly belongs.

After her parents moved her and her brother to America, Preeti Desai never meant to tear her family apart. All she did was fall in love with a white Christian carnivore instead of a conventional Indian boy. Years later, with her parents not speaking to her and her controversial relationship in tatters, all Preeti has left is her career at a prestigious Los Angeles law firm.

But when Preeti receives word of a terrible accident in the city where she was born, she returns to India, where she’ll have to face her estranged parents…and the complicated past they left behind. Surrounded by the sights and sounds of her heritage, Preeti catches a startling glimpse of her family’s battles with class, tradition, and sacrifice. Torn between two beautifully flawed cultures, Preeti must now untangle what home truly means to her.

“Fitting in meant letting go of who I was and becoming someone new.

The Taste of Ginger is an interesting take on what it means to reconnect with your family, heritage, and the world left behind as an immigrant. This story follows Preeti and her family as they face together a tragic accident that could cause the loss of two family members. As Preeti travels back to India, she struggles to reconciliate with who she’s meant to be (based on family expectations) and who she longs to become.

In this journey of self-discovery, identity and cultural clashes/biases, we also get to explore the beautiful city of Ahmedabad, a historical city that was pronounced as a world heritage site by UNESCO. Reason why I decided to share with you a fun mini tour-guide / travel bucket list!!!

Places I Would love to visit in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India!

India is one of our top favorite countries that we would love to visit one day, we have a deep respect for their culture, heritage and their people so it would truly be a dream come true to be able to see it one day! 😍✨ The Taste of Ginger takes place in Ahmedabad and I couldn’t help but research a little about this urban metropolis with a glorious history. It is known to be one of the most modern cities in India, yet steeped in history and culture. So without farther ado, follow along as we dream visiting Ahmedabad!

Dada Hari Vav

First, we have Dada Hari Vav, it is a beautiful stepwell in Ahmedabad known for intricate carvings and stunning architecture of a bygone era will make your jaw drop. I also read it is every photographer’s dream to visit it!

Patang Kite Museum

This inspiring museum displays a varied collection of kites and the materials used in making the kites. Key highlights include mirror work kites, Japanese kites and block print kites. Plus you will also learn the history and art behind these beatiful creations!! ❤️

Sun Temple Modhera

The remains of the Sun Temples at Modhera are relics of times gone by when reverence of the natural elements fire, air, earth, water and sky were at their peak sharing space with myriad manifestations of Vedic gods. We would be thrilled to visit it since we also have The Temple of the Sun here in México, it is also one of our most precious structures. Aah, the Sun Temple Modhera looks STUNNING, a place we cannot miss! ☀️✨

Shree Swaminarayan Mandir Kalupur

And last but not least, Shree Swaminarayan Mandir Kalupur! It is the first Temple of the Swaminarayan Sampraday, it’s a valuable cultural heritage in the socio-religious history of Gujarat and India. Doesn’t it look glorious?!
