Book Review: Seafire by Natalie C. Parker

There’s no better word for me to simply describe Seafire than Wow. Honestly, it doesn’t even begin to cover it. From start to finish, this book kept me hooked and feeling so much PRIDE for the brave young women commanding and working hard aboard the Mors Navis.

An all-female pirate crew in YA Fantasy is rarely heard off and it was simply amazing and empowering. Every girl and women so precious and talented, I wasn’t even in page 10 when I was already loving and admiring them all. I wasn’t even in page 85 when I was already crying for their loss.

Seafire is told from the POV of Caledonia Styx, the captain of the Mors Navis. Caledonia is a force to be reckoned with and the best at what she does. All 52 members of her crew look up for her guidance and would follow her til’ the ends of the world, whether that would take them straight into a band of Aric Athair’s Bullets or simply out to open sea. I loved that she was fierce and protective of every girl under her command, but also felt for how she secretly felt guilty, vulnerable and angry for the reason why she and her friend Pisces lost their families in the hands of one of Aric’s minions. The reason why she would NEVER again trust a bullet.

The magic of Seafire is that you are not only reading about an epic and dangerous journey across the seas, but you are somehow drawn into the story and instantly another member of the crew, trying your best to help them succeed outrunning or fighting Bullets who have corrupted their world, while also making sure none of your sisters gets harmed. Sisterhood is the most important thing for the Mors Navis, and I loved how it never took a back seat. Front and center, for better or for worse, every girl and women of the crew fought relentlessly and gave it their all–sometimes even their lives– for the sake of their family.

I just find it impossible for me to pick a favorite character since this book is just FULL of amazing personalities. What I can say is that everyone is going to love Caledonia, Pisces, Lace, Amina, Redtooth, Hime, Nettle, and the other ladies that formed part of the sisterhood. Possibly even love a certain Bullet that doesn’t seem to be like the rest of the Bullets determined to carry on Aric Athair’s awful deeds. And that is the only drawback of loving them all fiercely– the painful moments when not all can come out unscathed in a world such as cruel as theirs.

Final Verdict:

Seafire has everything I love in YA Fantasy. Non-stop action, unrelenting and badass heroines of all type of personalities, and a dangerous and terrible world system that I cannot wait for the crew of the Mors Navis to completely take down. Do not expect to catch your breath while reading Seafire, it will take you on a wild sea adventure with the fiercest and most talented crew to ever exist!
