In this spellbinding thriller and YA debut from bestselling author Marti Leimbach, Kira Adams has discovered a cure for deathand it may just cost her life.
Things aren’t going well for Kira. At home, she cares for her mother and fends off debt collectors. At school, she’s awkward and shy. Plus, she may flunk out if she doesn’t stop obsessing about science, her passion and the one thing she’s good at . . . very good at.
When she wins a prestigious science contest she draws the attention of the celebrated professor Dr. Gregory Munn (as well as his handsome assistant), leading to a part-time job in a top-secret laboratory.
The job is mostly cleaning floors and equipment, but one night, while running her own experiment, she revives a lab rat that has died in her care.
One minute it is dead, the next it is not.
Suddenly she’s the remarkable wunderkind, the girl who can bring back the dead. Everything is going her way. But it turns out that science can be a dangerous business, and Kira is swept up into a world of international rivalry with dark forces that threaten her life.

What to expect from Dragonfly Girl?

It’s been a while since I’ve read a science YA thriller so when I learned about Dragonfly Girl I immediately wanted to pick it up! First of all, let me say that I LOVE the cover, it is so beautiful and eye catching. And the book was so good, it had me hooked from page one.

We get to meet Kira, an incredibly intelligent teenager that has an affinity for science and math. I felt so much for her character: her mother is sick, they have money problems (trouble with loan sharks) and to top it all off, she also gets bullied at school. It feels like she can never catch a break, however her luck changes when she wins an important science contest and manages to get a part time job at a laboratory.

Throughout the story we get to meet several great characters, but my favorites were Lauren and Dmitry. Lauren is Kira’s best friend and number one cheerleader. I just loved how she supported Kira all the time, giving her advice and simply just being there for her. And on the other hand we have Dmitry who Kira gets to meet later when she goes to work at the secret lab and they quickly become friends. I loved how sweet, funny and extremely smart he is.

I would also like to mention the highly unlikable characters of Dragonfly Girl, like Will, her bullies, Biba and other random secondary characters. I thought they were so well written and omg, how much I hated them. Some of them prove to be not so evil, but yikes, they surely represent the ugly side of humankind and how thirst for power can corrupt a system that was supposed to be for the well being of society.

Another thing that I would like to mention is how captivating the writing style is. Dragonfly Girl is divided into three parts and I loved how it felt like I was reading three stories in one book. We had a problem at the beginning of each part and by the end of it, we somehow get a conclusion. I thought that was pretty awesome!

As I was finishing reading Dragonfly Girl, it had me: “What?! This cannot possibly be it?!” I really need more of this story, I want to know more of Kira, her future and what happens next. This was such a great read, I truly recommend it to all sci-fi/thriller lovers out there, I cannot wait for the sequel to come out!!
