Derek Draco is finally learning to put the past behind him and enjoy life with his friends and as a Guardian. But when news of a string of recent murders reaches them, Derek finds himself having to return to the place he had hoped to never set foot in again—Windfell. The town where his parents died.

Meanwhile, Jared, the Prince of Aloseria and Derek's best friend, finds himself helping to uncover a sinister plot brewing in the shadows. It soon becomes clear that not only could the fate of their world be under threat, but that dark plans may lie in wait for his friend.

Lady Night will be the second installment in the Chronicles of the Guardians series.

Why you need to read Lady Night

In Ember, everyone seemed to walk around with a bounce in their step. They smiled at one another as they passed by, calling out cheerful greetings and pausing in the streets to talk about how beautiful their neighbour’s roses were looking or to ask a friend for the recipe to their carrot cake. In Windfell, everyone was much more sombre, looking either sad or irritable as they shuffled up and down the streets, grumbling about the cold or trading insults and gossip like it was coin.

I can’t believe I am here now to share about Lady Night, the sequel to Amulet of Wishes. I read book 1 in the Chronicles of the Guardians back in February of this year and I remember feeling a bit lost after finishing. The thing is, the characters in this series are so precious and I just wish I could meet them in real life. I love Derek, for who he is—brave, strong, and loyal— but at the same time, for simply surviving what life has thrown at him after witnessing the brutal deaths of his parents & having to go against their last wishes to become a Guardian.

Now, in book 2, Derek and his best friends, Jared and Arabelle, continue their lives as Guardians and everything seems to be going okay. But as a new antagonist is introduced, it is clear that Derek’s past refuses to let go of him and he must face once more the mystery behind what happened that fateful night and why. Lady Night goes a bit darker & it’s a fitting direction as our heroes continue to grow into their roles. As Guardians and due to their ever-growing knowledge and power, they also go off into different paths as duty calls. But through it all (and just like in Amulet of Wishes) this book is packed with action, adventure, magic & overall, amazing friendship & banter to keep you company through it all. Absolutely cannot wait for the third installment!!

Author Q&A with Rita A. Rubin

Hi Rita! Welcome to our blog. We loved Amulet of Wishes and we are super excited for its sequel, Lady of Night. As a refresher, can you let us know what inspired you to write the Chronicles of the Guardians series?

Chronicles of the Guardians is a story that’s been brewing in my mind for some years now. It was inspired by my life-long love of fantasy, and I suppose you could also say it’s a bit of a love letter to my younger self and everyone else who needs a story to encourage them to hope for better times when things get difficult.

Introduce us to your main character, Derek Draco!

Derek is our main protagonist of the series. He’s a 16-year-old, half Wood Elf and a rookie Guardian—meaning he can Change into a dragon with the help of an enchanted ring. His parents were killed when he was a child and he now lives in the city of Ember, with his adoptive father, Darus.

If the characters of Lady of Night would live in our world, what social media apps would they love and what books would they be sharing about in their pages (besides their own series, of course!)?

I feel like Derek would mostly avoid social media. He might have Instagram or Facebook to keep in touch with people, but he’d only have one photo on his profile from three years ago and it would be of his cat and the book he was reading at the time, which would have been one of The Witcher books. Jared’s not a reader, but I could see him being really into shows like Young Royals and the new Interview with the Vampire and tweeting a lot about them. Arabelle would mostly post about books by V.E. Schwab, Margaret Rogerson and Samantha Shannon on her Instagram and Tumblr.

What was the most challenging aspect about writing this sequel compared to book 1?

I had a hard time figuring out how to write the murder mystery plot at first, since it’s the first time I’ve ever written one. And where Amulet of Wishes was a classic quest story that all of our main characters are on together, Lady Night sees our main characters being split up and having different adventures, so there’s a couple of storylines to follow and that was also something I struggled with trying to get right in the beginning.

On a scale of 1-10, how much will Derek & his friends struggle in Lady Night?

I’m going to rate the struggle factor a 10 purely because Derek alone really goes through some stuff in this book.

If you could visit three places in the world of the Chronicles of the Guardians, where would you go?

Ember would definitely be top of my list. And of course, I’d love to visit the Great Forest, where the Wood Elves live. I’d also like to visit the Valley in Windfell (but only when it’s safe from mysterious murderers).

That would be amazing!! Thank you so much for being with us Rita! We’re thrilled to be back in the world of Chronicles of the Guardians!! ♥
