I received this book for free from HarperTeen, MTMC Tours in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

From the author of The Disasters, this genre-bending YA fantasy heist story is perfect for fans of Marie Lu and Amie Kaufman.
In Kyrkarta, magic—known as maz—was once a freely available natural resource. Then an earthquake released a magical plague, killing thousands and opening the door for a greedy corporation to make maz a commodity that’s tightly controlled—and, of course, outrageously expensive.
Which is why Diz and her three best friends run a highly lucrative, highly illegal maz siphoning gig on the side. Their next job is supposed to be their last heist ever.
But when their plan turns up a powerful new strain of maz that (literally) blows up in their faces, they’re driven to unravel a conspiracy at the very center of the spellplague—and possibly save the world.
No pressure.

…The Reader’s Review…

four-half-stars

Spellhacker is my first M.K. England book and now I cannot wait to read more from them! I received a finished copy of this fantastic genre-bending futuristic fantasy book only a few days ago and I flew through the pages in one go because it was just SO GOOD. *cue fangirling*

If you love heist stories full of magic but with epic twists, an epic diverse squad and a bit of romance, you will LOVE Spellhacker. In Kyrkarta, magic is known as MAZ and it’s like a natural resource, There’s elemental maz (known as core strains) but there are other strains for concealment, protection, enhancing vigor and repleneshing strength. So awesome! This Maz used to flow freely, allowing society to be able to wield it from the very air. But 20 years ago, an earthquake let loose a spellplague that decimated the entire population, leaving many orphans, and some of the survivors who could wield the maz, incredibly sick with no cure and a big corporation controlling the Maz flow. However, our story is told from an orphan who doesn’t have the ability to wield maz, yet her true calling relies on creating epic tech that allows people to control maz, and perhaps… the necessary hacking skills to steal it.

So yeah, I very much loved this premise and even more the execution. Our main character Diz is incredibly smart and so good at what she does best — messing with tech and stealing back maz. And she’s an incredibly angry character but with good reason. The spellplague killed her parents and she had to watch her mother DIE right in front of her, then having to deal with the government casting her off to live among the other orphans (which by now is half the population), naturally leaving her completely bitter and slightly scared of the maz. It’s only after meeting her friends Remi, Jaesin and Ania, that she begins to feel a bit more comfortable around it and sees the need of stealing Maz for their own benefit to sell off on the black market.

And speaking of the gang, I just want to say how much I adore Remi, Jaesin and Ania. Remi with their prodigy maz-wielding ability, Jaesin with his adorable & charming dad-personality (plus exuberant cooking), and Ania who could wield wards like no other. ♥ I LOVE them just as much as Diz does, even though I would get annoyed at how they just did not understand Diz who was just struggling with the fact that she would be left ALONE after they move out to pursue their careers and new life goals. She was so scared of losing them but sigh, it’s not their fault either.

Okay, not trying to spoil this book any further but would like to also note that this book tackles how big corporations love to be in CONTROL of big sources of power, not caring how this affects entire population. How they and the media love to spin tales. How only the privileged are the ones to have access to the sources that should be available freely. And it’s so, so true. Spellhacker reflects our society, only with Maz instead of our own natural resources.

So truly, Spellhacker is a fun read full of great characters and an epic twist on magic. Not to mention a slow-burn f/enby romance that made me feel all the FEELS. Naturally there are so many layers to this story and it’s best that you discover them without any more spoilers. I highly suggest you pick up this book and then to come fangirl with me! 😀
