For some, knowing the truth is worse than living a lie.

Everly Martin, eighteen years old and fiercely ambitious, takes pity on Nicolai after accidentally swiping right on a dating app. She doesn't have time for love, not with her desperation to finish college and earn enough money to help her single mom pay the bills. But from the moment they meet at a coffee shop, Nicolai terrifies her with the instant connection they form. He couldn't have come at a worse time, because that same morning, Everly learns she's pregnant. And to make matters worse, she isn't sure who the father of her child is.

Though Everly is determined to stay far away from Nicolai, he reappears in her life, this time in a way she can't ignore. While fighting her growing attraction for him, Everly is haunted by the knowledge that her baby's father might actually be a terrible person. She's willing to find out, even if learning the truth ultimately ends in heartbreak.

Nicolai might not have a place in Everly's future, but when he helps her discover a shocking truth about her past—a truth that could either change everything for the better, or destroy it even more—Everly must decide what's more important: giving her child the life she's always wanted, or following her heart and choosing love.

Character Q&A with Everly
from Something Bright and Burning

Hi Everly! Can you introduce yourself?

Hi. I’m Everly Martin and I work at a salon but I’m going to school to be an engineer. I can’t wait to finish college.

When your story begins, what is your life like?

Honestly? My life isn’t great. I work hard to help my mom, Mariah, pay the bills, but we never seem to catch a break.

What do you want more than anything?

I want to be able to wake up each day knowing there will be food on the table and a safe place for us to live. That’s only going to happen once I finish college and get a good job.

What was your first impression of Nicolai?

Well, my first impression was very inconveniently how attractive he is. I also couldn’t help but notice he kinda looks like Thor. My little sister Amma must have drawn that super hero hundreds of times.

Are you good at keeping secrets? And who is the first person you tell secrets to?

Some secrets are just too important to tell. I have no problem writing letters to myself in my journal. It’s really hard for me to open up to others, but if I’m going to tell anyone something, it will probably be my best friend, Simone.

Best/worst things about your job?

The best part of my job is definitely the pay. I get more than minimum wage and I’ve never worked at a salon before. I also really like my manager Willow, and the owner, Ashton.

But the worst part of my job is definitely my coworker, Vaughn. I don’t even want to get into him.

If you had a day off to do anything you liked, what would you do?

Is it sad that I can’t even imagine such a thing? I can’t remember the last time I had a whole day to do anything I wanted. Maybe I’d read, though. Not for school, but for fun. I used to be a big reader before I had to take on so many responsibilities.

Tell us 2 random facts about yourself!

I find horror movies relaxing and I’ve always wanted a sports car.

Lastly, what can we expect from you during Something Bright And Burning?

You’ll probably get a peek into my journal and some of the poetry I’ve written. You can expect me to be pretty blunt. And you can expect a lot of things to happen to me that aren’t fair. But that’s life. Or…at least mine.

Aah, thank you so much for the amazing answers Everly! We had a blast!!❤️

About Whitney Amazeen

Whitney Amazeen’s love for reading started in third grade and has been going strong ever since. As a result, Whitney has evolved into a full-fledged daydreamer with more stories in her head than she can count. When she’s not immersed in a novel, Whitney spends the majority of her time writing down stories about characters in her head who demand to be heard. Whitney lives in California with her husband and son, and can often be found drinking tea, hoping for foggy weather, and obsessing over fictional characters.
