I received this book for free from Simon & Schuster, MTMC Tours, Author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

For fans of Love, Simon and Eleanor and Park, a romantic and sweet novel about a transgender boy who falls in love for the first time—and how first love changes us all—from New York Times bestselling author Amber Smith.

Chris and Maia aren’t off to a great start.

A near-fatal car accident first brings them together, and their next encounters don’t fare much better. Chris’s good intentions backfire. Maia’s temper gets the best of her.

But they’re neighbors, at least for the summer, and despite their best efforts, they just can’t seem to stay away from each other.

The path forward isn’t easy. Chris has come out as transgender, but he’s still processing a frightening assault he survived the year before. Maia is grieving the loss of her older sister and trying to find her place in the world without her. Falling in love was the last thing on either of their minds.

But would it be so bad if it happened anyway?

…The Chef’s Review…

Gosh, where do I begin?! Something Like Gravity has been one of the most sweetest and heartfelt YA contemporary  books I’ve read so far this year. I loved the plot, the characters and I just enjoyed reading Chris’ and Maia’s story so much!!!

For starters, we follow the story of Chris, a transgender boy that is recovering from an assault he suffered a year ago, and Maia who is mourning the death of her older sister. Chris spends the summer with his aunt Isobel in a small town called Carson in North Carolina, which so happens to be the same town where Maia lives, and coincidentally, her aunt’s neighbor. There were so many things that I loved about their relationship, but the thing that stood out to me the most was how good they were for each other. Even though this book is about the romance that blooms between them, it is also about their journey together as friends. I just love genuine friendship stories so much and I appreciated how their romance developed slowly from strangers, to friends, and ultimately ended in love.

Another thing that I would love to point out is how perfectly the author described the pain and the coping part when it comes to losing a loved one. I felt the pain of Maia’s grief and also how it affected her family, even her dog Roxie (this in particular hit pretty close to home).

Since this story is about a trans boy, I can’t really say much about the rep since I don’t identify as trans, BUT what I can say is that I really loved Chris and his POV was my favorite of the two. However, readers might find some triggering subjects directed towards his character such as transphobia and sexual assault in certain parts of the book (particularly near the end).

With that said, I really enjoyed reading Something Like Gravity! It brought me to tears a few times but I spent most of my reading time smiling at the antics of both characters.

Something Like Gravity Playlist

by Isabel (the chef)

I LOVE music. A day cannot go by without me taking a second to listen to favorite songs of all genres while I get my work done. So naturally, I always end up mentally creating playlists for my current reads and I could’t pass the chance to share some of my favorite oldies but goodies in a Spotify playlist since Chris and Maia seem to like these songs too.  My playlist is inspired by the cassettes that Chris’ aunt had stored in her old station wagon which he now drives. Now let’s pretend this playlist is another cassette mix and totally not as technological haha!

  • Summer Nights-Grease   (This is a song that Maia and her friend Hayden sing because they love the movie)
  • Footloose- Kenny Loggins   (Since they watched Grease, maybe they watched Footloose too???)
  • One- Bee Gees    (I feel that aunt Isobel might have listened to the Bee Gees)
  • I Want to Break Free- Queen   (I JUST LOVE THIS SONG SO MUCH, I had to include it!!!!)                                         (And Chris mentioned that some casettes where from the 90s, so I picked these songs for the rest of the playlist)
  • Smells Like Teen Spirit- Nirvana
  • Wonderwall- Oasis
  • Killing Me Softly- Fugees
  • Iris- Goo Goo Dolls
  • Bitter Sweet Symphony- The Verve
  • Linger- The Cranberries   (How could I not add this song!!!)
