This is the second book I have read of Iain Reading and I must say that I love reading his books. Kitty Hawk and the Curse of the Yukon Gold is such a perfect middle grade read. It is the kind of book that is considered fiction but it’s full of information and true facts about certain topics. This book is the first of the series. While reading it, I was reminded a lot of Amelia Earhart and Pippi Longstocking and I’m thrilled to discover that I wasn’t so far-off since the book summary above mentions that Iain Reading took those characters along with Nancy Drew for inspiration.
What I liked:
I really liked that this book combines make-believe with educational information. It makes it so much entertaining to learn about certain aspects of history, culture, geography, etc. This book really covers a lot of topics, even common judgment and what not to do. The characters were amusing and even though there were some aspects of Kitty Hawk that I didn’t agree with her, I still thought she rocked and came through with her story. Also, I loved the small storytellings within the book that were intriguing as well as spooky true.
What didn’t do it for me:
For my liking, I thought that the story was a bit slow; however, it picked up after a few chapters.
Final Verdict:
I love it when a book manages to tell you a fiction story within facts, it makes it so fascinating and otherworldly. When I finished reading it, I did some background studying about the Yukon Gold Rush and ended up researching more than I intended to in the first place. It is just so freakishly engaging.
I highly recommend this book. Even though it might take time at first to get hooked on the story, I encourage to keep reading, it gets better.
