When her brother goes missing, Derry’s only hope of finding him is to strike a deal with a group of cutthroat subversives. Keeping her brother alive may require trusting her enemy and opening her heart to something she never thought possible.
Immurement is the first book in The Undergrounders Series, a sci-fi dystopian thriller trilogy with a gritty complex heroine and twists you won’t see coming!
At first I thought that for being such a short read, this book wouldn’t have a lot of details or progress as to where the series might be headed. I was pleasantly surprised that from the very first chapters, the story kicks off pretty quickly and the characters started their adventure right away.
Like most dystopian series, the future looks like a scary place. Society is not at all how it used to be and the world is in chaos. Scientists are working on a project not very well known by people, although they know is about cloning and suspect that it’s not in their favor. To avoid participating for the unknown project, the rest of humanity lives in hiding. The heroine of this story lives outside scientists’ headquarters but when they abduct her best friend in search for her brother, she is forced to start a rescue mission, even though that may mean to ally herself with unwanted company.
I felt that this book was a fast paced read and didn’t dwell too much in the same problem. It was entertaining and I liked the way the story progressed. Even though I’m not a complete fan of the main character, right in the middle of the book I started to like her more. She showed a better attitude towards the situation and handled herself a bit better. There were also other characters which I liked and made the story even better.
This dystopian book talks about how the Earth’s core overheats causing volcanoes throughout the world to explode. Isn’t it terrifying? At the same time so possible and realistic which makes it such a big threat. This reminds me of the first time I read about the Yosemite volcanoes, how they can bring devastation at any moment, and how I couldn’t sleep properly for several nights straight. It still scares me *shivers*. That’s why I always find it thrilling and frightening when I happen to read these kind of books because they always open possibilities as to where the future is headed.
This book is so action-packed, and yet I wished it had a bit more humor. I love it when stories incorporate comic relief just to light up the mood when things feel heavy, and this one certainly needed a lot more of that. However, I believe this series has a lot of potential of turning into something amazing. It has a great plot and it left me wondering of what might happen next.
Hmmm sounds pretty middle of the road for me. I think I'll pass on this one, Mel.
Never heard about this book before and though I don't like the cover so much, the story sounds interesting.
Great review, Chef!
