Book Review: Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

The poverty stricken Reds are commoners, living under the rule of the Silvers, elite warriors with god-like powers.

To Mare Barrow, a 17-year-old Red girl from The Stilts, it looks like nothing will ever change.

But power is a dangerous game. And in this world divided by blood, who will win? 

I just couldn’t put it down. I read it in less than a day and I am happy to know that it will become a series. It left me craving for the second book and I hope to buy it as soon as it comes out.

It’s about this girl, named Mare Barrow and she lives in a society where “Gods” exists. Humans have it pretty bad in this new world division since they are powerless against them. The world is divided by powers amongst “Gods” where they are constantly at war trying to gain more power, but the ones that are doing all the fighting for them are the humans, or as they like to call them, Reds.

Mare Barrow comes from a poor family in which all her three brothers and father are recruited for war. Her father gets “lucky” since he got injured and unable to fight so he was sent home to where her mother, little sister and Mare is. It’s only a matter of time that Mare gets recruited as well, but until then, she becomes an expert thief along her best friend Kilorn.

In a desperate attempt to escape war, Mare ties to buy her way out of it; however, she was unable to succeed. Mare was at a loss without nowhere to turn until she found a stranger and helped her get a job so she wouldn’t be recruited. A lot of things happened (I don’t want to spoil it so much), Mare shows off some special abilities she didn’t know she had and before she knew it she was made a noble at  the castle where she was obliged to betroth Maven (the prince second to the throne). To seal the deal, she exchanges her freedom for her family’s and friend’s safety.

Mare finds out that there is a secret group looking for a way to overthrow the government and she wastes no time to join due to her position. Now, Cal (the heir to the throne and super handsome prince), becomes her friend, although she is constantly reminded that there is no such things as that and most importantly: anyone can betray anyone. That can’t be truer giving the fact as to how the story develops…

It was very entertaining and I can’t wait to get my hands on the second book and see what happens next!
