It’s really tough for me to rate this book so low because I’ve loved previous books from this author and I wanted SO BAD to love this one too. Unfortunately, My Forever wasn’t cut out for me. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate the writing and it does have a lot of elements to be an awesome read and I’m sure many will enjoy it, but I just didn’t click with the main character, and for me, that’s a must in a book.
My problem with Maddy was that she’s not a nice person. At least, not nice when it came to her feelings about Parker. The guy has been her boyfriend for several years, but after her brother dies, she shuts him out completely despite all his support for her and starts hanging around with other guys behind his back, getting drunk and kissing a few of them. And, even though she wants a break from him, she keeps going on and on about how he is the love of her life. Oh, please. Why Lee then? Why keep leading Parker on?
I just couldn’t stand that EVERYONE likes her. Her boyfriend, her friends, her family, even her other love interest thinks she’s NICE. I simply don’t get it. So sorry Maddy, I did try to like you, however, for the sake of sweet Parker, I’ll just say that I’m glad that he ended up with you since he seemed happy about it, but that’s it.
My Forever deals with loss, heartbreak and the hardships of having people inside the military, but because of Maddy, I couldn’t focus on any of these things. They were great themes, but they where completely overshadowed by her actions and my great dislike of her character. Sorry to say that I can’t recommend this book.
I totally understand not being able to connect with the main character and how that can ruin a book, it sure has done that for me a time or two. Great Review, Melissa, as always! 🙂
