The Week’s Entrée #7

Posted March 10, 2014 by Melissa in Uncategorized / 0 Comments

Whaaaat, it’s Monday already? I can’t believe time flies so fast! Here we are once again with another edition of The Week’s Entrée and I’m happy to say I have a few things to talk about.

First, I think, I THINK, the Chef is back. You remember her, right? She is the cause why this blog is The Reader AND the Chef, not just The Reader (me). She’s a terrible blogger but I still love her (because she’s my sister), besides, she’s been pretty busy lately so I sort-of forgive her.

Anyway, she has a new recipe to share this week and it’s oh-so-GOOD. Something for your sweet tooth. 😉

In other news…
I didn’t write a review last week *gasp*. I feel a bit bummed about this, but I just couldn’t bring myself to sit down and write one even though I did finish a book:
Let The Sky Fall by Shannon Messenger
Published March 5th 2013 by Simon Pulse

It’s such a cool story and now I know why everybody has been raving about it. I’m so glad to have read it and even more to have found out about Pulse it. Have you checked this site? You can read books for free courtesy of Simon & Schuster! Last week, Let The Sky Fall was free to read online and this week they have Afterparty by Ann Redish Stampler and The Program by Suzanne Young available to read now. Pretty awesome.
Also, later on today we’ll be having a cover reveal, so stay tuned! (Or check your inbox).

Books I Bought, Won or Received:
I downloaded another 2 books from Netgalley last week and I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to read them, they both sound fantastic:

Feather Bound by Sarah Raughley
Expected publication: May 6th, 2014/ Strange Chemistry

When Deanna’s missing friend Hyde turns up at his father’s funeral to claim his corporate empire and inheritance, she is swept into his glittering world of paparazzi and wealth.
But re-kindling her friendship and the dizzying new emotions along for the ride are the least of her concerns. Because Deanna has a secret – and somebody knows. Someone who is out to get Hyde. And if she doesn’t play along, and help the enemy destroy him…she will be sold to the highest bidder in the black market for human swans.
Now Deanna is struggling to break free from the gilded cage that would trap her forever…
Feather Bound is a dark debut reminiscent of Gabriel García Márquez’s A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings, and the twisted truth behind the fairy tale of Cinderella.

Aspen by Rebekah Crane
Expected publication: June 5th, 2014/ In This Together Media

One quiet night in Boulder, Colorado, Aspen Yellow-Sunrise Taylor made a mistake.
In the next instant, her life changed forever.
Aspen doesn’t want to remember the devastating car accident that killed Katelyn Ryan, a sleek-haired popular soccer player. But forgetting is hard– because Katelyn may have died — but she didn’t leave. Her ghost is following Aspen around, and heading into senior year, it’s kind of a problem. Especially when Katelyn’s gorgeous former boyfriend Ben appears to be the only person at school with a clue as to how Aspen feels.
Popularity, college, Homecoming Court, hot guys – none of these things ever mattered to Aspen. She’s been busy trying to rein in her giant mass of blonde curls, keep her stoner mother Ninny away from Toaster, her mom’s awful bongo drumming boyfriend, and prevent her best friends Kim and Cass from killing – or kissing – one another. But with Ben sitting next to her in Physics looking all too gorgeous, Katelyn’s spirit dogging her steps, and her obsessive snow-globe collecting therapist begging her to remember all the things she wants to forget, Aspen is thrust into a vivid, challenging world she can’t control … and doesn’t want to.
A darkly funny, emotionally gripping story of opening up, letting go, and moving on, ASPEN is about the best-worst accident of your life … and what comes next.
I received for review a YA Science-fantasy ebook that promises to have quests, strong female characters and a hint of Lord of the Rings. I’m excited to see if all of that is true!
The Breath of Aoles by Alan Spade
Published: February 27th, 2014/ Self-published

Pelmen hates being a tanner, but that’s all he would ever be, thanks to the rigid caste system amongst his people, the hevelens. Then he meets Master Galn Boisencroix and his family. The master carpenter opens up the world of archery to young Pelmen, who excels at his newfound skill. But Pelmen’s intractable father would have none of it, and tries to force Pelmen to stay in the tannery.
One day, however, Pelmen’s best friend and Master Galn’s son, Teleg, disappears. Lured away by the prospect of untold riches through mining amberrock, the most precious substance in the world, Teleg finds himself a prisoner of the Nylevs, fierce fire-wielding worshippers of the god of destruction.
Now Pelmen must leave all he knows behind, overcome his fears and travel across the land, in search of his childhood friend. Along the way, he will ally himself with strange and fantastic beings: a shaman who controls the Breath of Aoles, or the power of the wind, a krongos, a creature of the mineral realm who can become living rock, and a malian, adept at water magic.
Aaaaand I finally bought Until We Meet Again by S.E. Campbell, but I already talked about it last week. 😉

To Read This Week:

Until We Meet Again is still on my reading list for this week, but if I have time I’ll try to squeeze in:

Ben the Dragonborn by Dianne Astle
Published: November 24th, 2013/ CreateSpace
Every night Ben has the same nightmare; two moons in the sky, winged creatures of scale and claw, dark waters closing over his head. Soon Ben will discover that not all dreams are fiction. He must find out who his parents are, what his own powers mean, and if they will be enough to keep those he cares about safe. But first he must find out what secrets hide in the offices of the Head Mistress.
