Ding Dong, the Technowitch is dead.

As an illegal clone of the murdered galactic princess, Dora's face would get her killed the minute she steps off her dull farming moon. She spends her days tinkering with gadgets and gears, with Tau, her kitchen-timer-bot, for company. But when forces close in and threaten her family, her escape attempt lands her deep in the Outer Zone — and on top of the Technowitch of Night, crushing her in the process.

Now a fugitive in two solar systems, Dora's only chance of survival is to find her way to the mysterious Technomage on his Emerald moon. In a place where science has advanced to be indistinguishable from magic, she must accept the help of an unlikely trio: a cryogenically-preserved girl with no memory, an obsolete theme park droid, and a bioengineered beast with a penchant for the dramatic.

As Dora realizes there's more to the princess's death than what the universe has been told, she must choose — save her family, or risk everything to right a centuries-old wrong.

Why you need to read Over the Moon

“And if they find you—run. Run to the end of the road and don’t look back.”

After a literal crashing disappointment, Dora finds herself in a whole new planet to explore. She has lived her entire life in hiding and all she wanted was to attend university and pursue her dream of becoming a high tech engineer. And the thing is that it’s not easy being an illegal clone to the Sylvarian System’s (their universe) adored Princess, and it got worse for Dora after the tragic death of said Princess Jo’Niss.

“I’ve wanted to be free—well, here I am. Hello universe, up close and personal, my own front-row seat to the stars.”

Dora is amazing! She’s someone that has been forced to live in shadow, and the moment she decides to take her future in her own hands, she’s forced to flee for her life. I completely understood her motivation to pursue her dreams and her exasperation of not being able to since she had to hide her identity. With a huge passion for robotics, a likable personality and her enthusiasm of exploring the outside world, Dora is a character that is hard not to love. Plus, her pet robot Tau is the absolute cutest, together they make a great team!

“Somewhere over the moon, over the solar system, light years away, there has to be a better place than this. A place where I can show my face without fear of retribution.”

Over the Moon is a loose retelling of The Wizard of Oz in a futuristic world that also crashes with the old world, but with its unique twists that makes this sci-fi fantasy into such an enjoyable read. The characters are outstanding, Dora gets to travel with three other companions and she gets to meet them one by one and learning a bit of their backstory & motivations was definitely a highlight for me. Dora, Crow, Nemo and Nekkan share the mission of meeting the Technomage, to see if he can help with each of their personal goals/struggles. And together they set off in the hopes to find him.

I was charmed by this story! Over the Moon is an exciting read, character driven, with a bit of romance and friendship bonds that will leave you smiling. I was so invested in their story and I just kept wishing for Dora to thrive. Excited to see where her story is headed, as the book ended in such a promising note!

Recommending Animes based on the characters of
Over the Moon

Meet the main characters of Over the Moon with these stunning character illustrations!

For my creative stop, I decided I wanted to recommend an anime based on the characters of Over the Moon. These recs are a mix between what I think matches well with each character’s personality and what would probably would be on their to-watch list or among their all-time favorites. But personally, these animes are on MY favorite list as well so I’m super excited to share it with you. So without further ado, read all about them below & do let me know what you think! Also, have you watched any of these?! 😍

Dora: Astra Lost in Space

For Dora, I would highly recommend Astra Lost in Space! Flung 5,000 light years from their civilization, a group of students band together to pilot a derelict spaceship with the shared goal of making the dangerous journey back home. I think she would enjoy this high tech sci-fi mystery anime. Amazing plot twists, lots of traveling, plus she would find that the characters super relatable!

………..

Crow: Gintama

For Crow I would recommend Gintama! When feudal Japan is invaded by aliens, chaos is unleashed. However, there is hope after an unemployed samurai forms a squad to combat them. To be honest I would recommend this anime to ANYONE, but specially to Crow or to fans of his character! This is one of my all-time favorite animes (actually, my #1) and I think she would enjoy the three rascals who lead this anime, along with the rest of the cast, plus the constant chaos and hilarous everyday life!  100/10

………..

Nemo: Howl’s Moving Castle

For sweet Nemo I would recommend Howl’s Moving Castle! Jealous of Sophie’s closeness to Howl, a wizard, the Witch of Waste transforms her into an old lady. Sophie must find a way to break the spell with the help of Howl’s friends, Calcifer and Markl. Here I am recommending yet another anime that I adore, the beautiful artwork behind this gorgeous masterpiece is truly inspiring and I feel that Nemo would also appreciate it as well. Also Howl is AMAZING, such an iconic character!

………..

Nekkan: Demon Slayer

And for Nekkan I would recommend Demon Slayer! It follows teenage Tanjiro Kamado, who strives to become a demon slayer after his family was slaughtered and his younger sister, Nezuko, turned into a demon. This anime has made me equally cry and laugh out loud, and despite having dark themes, what mostly shines is the MC’s compassion, kindness and love for his sister, his only living family member and motivation in life. I believe Nekkan would agree with me when I say that this is a must watch!

About S.E. Anderson

S.E. Anderson can’t ever tell you where she’s from. Not because she doesn’t want to, but because it inevitably leads to a confusing conversation where she goes over where she was born (England) where she grew up (France) and where her family is from (USA) and it tends to make things very complicated.

She’s lived pretty much her entire life in the South of France, except for a brief stint where she moved to Washington DC, or the eighty years she spent as a queen of Narnia before coming back home five minutes after she had left. Currently, she is working on her PhD in Astrophysics and Planetary sciences in Besançon, France.

When she’s not writing, or trying to science, she’s either reading, designing, crafting, or attempting to speak with various woodland creatures in an attempt to get them to do household chores for her. She could also be gaming, or pretending she’s not watching anything on Netflix.
