The Alchemists of Loom
(Loom Saga #1)

January 10th, 2017 from Keymaster Press

Her vengeance. His vision.

Ari lost everything she once loved when the Five Guilds’ resistance fell to the Dragon King. Now, she uses her unparalleled gift for clockwork machinery in tandem with notoriously unscrupulous morals to contribute to a thriving underground organ market. There isn’t a place on Loom that is secure from the engineer turned thief, and her magical talents are sold to the highest bidder as long as the job defies their Dragon oppressors.

Cvareh would do anything to see his sister usurp the Dragon King and sit on the throne. His family’s house has endured the shame of being the lowest rung in the Dragons’ society for far too long. The Alchemist Guild, down on Loom, may just hold the key to putting his kin in power, if Cvareh can get to them before the Dragon King’s assassins.

When Ari stumbles upon a wounded Cvareh, she sees an opportunity to slaughter an enemy and make a profit off his corpse. But the Dragon sees an opportunity to navigate Loom with the best person to get him where he wants to go.

He offers her the one thing Ari can’t refuse: A wish of her greatest desire, if she brings him to the Alchemists of Loom.

Unwritten/Cut Scraps from The Alchemists of Loom

As I am conceptualizing a world, I often times get glimpses of scenes in my head that begin to clutter my desk, notebooks, phone notes, and draft documents. I write in chronological order and do so to maintain excitement (with myself) for the world I am building and what I am working toward. However, sometimes, these moments, be it dialogue, world building, or a scene, are so powerful that I don’t want to lose them.
Because of this, I keep a document called “SCRAPS” with my draft. This is where I jot down the bare-bones of these scenes to draw from later. Sometimes, they make it into the final version. Other times, they no longer fit. But they really help me get into the mindset of my characters and help build my world.
These are some of those SCRAPS from writing THE ALCHEMISTS OF LOOM and where I had originally thought they would go…
SCRAP 1:
“Dragon, you have only just met her, and you are already older than she is likely to live. Yet you say that she has done more than you could ever hope to do… So, look me in the eye and tell me that you have not wasted your life so far. Tell me that every moment you have lived has been worth it.”

About this scrap…
This bit of dialogue I had envisioned being said to Cvareh somewhere around the middle to end of book one. Originally, I had thought Florence could say it, but it’s a bit too mature of a statement for where Florence is at this point in the overall story. It didn’t make it in because there wasn’t any other person both close and invested enough to Ari and Cvareh… but it was one of my original scraps because it hints at the idea that the Dragons have much longer lifespans than the Fenthri.
SCRAP 2:
“It’s Magic, it can’t be explained by your science.”
“But —”
“Do you only trust what can be measured and quantified by your limited means?”
“I trust the things I can see and touch.”

About this scrap…
This is a snippet of a conversation I imagined between Ari and Cvareh, it hints to some evolving feelings between them and underscores the very different ways in which they both approach the world.
SCRAP 3:
She’d watched it all day and hadn’t seen any valuable metals carted on or off it. She couldn’t sense Dragon magic, so it wasn’t moving reagents legally or illegally. All she had seen move on and off were textiles. She smirked in the darkness. An honest business? Who knew they still existed in Loom?
Honest men and women were, ironically, the people Arianna preferred to work with. She may fall on the “wrong” side of the “law” most times, but she never tried to hide the fact. She completed jobs as they were due and she lived up to her word on every account. The honest were also easier to predict, on the whole, than the liars. And Arianna didn’t like variables.
About this scrap…
This was part of a heist that was ultimately cut. But it really helped craft Arianna’s opinion of her trade.

  1. I really like that you have/she gave you these little scraps. I love seeing the author's thought process. I agree that the first scrap shows insight into Cvareh's opinion of Ari, but it would be too weird/mature/not her voice for Flor to say it. Maybe next book? Petra?

  2. I've heard so many fantastic things about this book, and I love how unique it sounds. I am always interested in some refreshing fantasy. 🙂 Thanks for sharing these these and for the giveaway opportunity!

  3. I love Elise Kova's books and this one sounds so amazing! It's already on my TBR and can't wait to read it! And it's really interesting her writing process. I'm sure I'm going to read this soon 🙂
