Book Summary:
When Ruby woke up on her tenth birthday, something about her had changed. Something alarming enough to make her parents lock her in the garage and call the police. Something that gets her sent to Thurmond, a brutal government “rehabilitation camp.” She might have survived the mysterious disease that’s killed most of America’s children, but she and the others have emerged with something far worse: frightening abilities they cannot control.

Now sixteen, Ruby is one of the dangerous ones.

When the truth comes out, Ruby barely escapes Thurmond with her life. Now she’s on the run, desperate to find the one safe haven left for kids like her—East River. She joins a group of kids who escaped their own camp. Liam, their brave leader, is falling hard for Ruby. But no matter how much she aches for him, Ruby can’t risk getting close. Not after what happened to her parents.

When they arrive at East River, nothing is as it seems, least of all its mysterious leader. But there are other forces at work, people who will stop at nothing to use Ruby in their fight against the government. Ruby will be faced with a terrible choice, one that may mean giving up her only chance at a life worth living.

 *The Chef’s Review*

     My rating: 5/5 stars

What! Is this for real! The ending, Oh My God the ending! I couldn’t just leave the book alone, it had me on edge at all times. Alexandra Bracken  is amazing, I loved it.
It starts with a little girl named Ruby who doesn’t know what’s going on. The adults are starting to say that a new disease is taking all over and that it only affects kids and that it eventually leads to death. The government, trying to save the population, came up with camps where the children will be treated and hopefully cured.
However, Ruby finds herself stuck in a camp where they are sorted into different colors depending in their “illness” where they are treated badly. The thing is that instead of illness, the children are developing powers and the society seems threatened by them and want to put a stop to them. Ruby discovers that she is an “orange”, the most feared color. She somehow manages to scape the “rehabilitation camp” where she quickly finds a group of kids on their way to a safe community.

Ruby, along with Zu, Chubs and Liam, go through a lot of danger dodging adults and kid hunters until they finally get to arrive in the safe community. It is called East River functioned only by children with a leader of their own kind. Ruby learns to practice her powers there which by the way, is controlling human thoughts. They start to get a feeling of unease in East River so they try to scape, but got caught. After that everything sort of got downhill.

And I must stop there. I cannot say anything else except that if you are into exciting, emotional and adventurous read, you must get your hands in this one.
