Recipe: Pita bread

Sorry guys, I couldn’t resist. I know it’s a little bit overrated, but come on!… how could I not?  I made Peeta bread! Ok, fine it’s Pita bread. It’s so simple, rewarding and delicious to bake. You can stuff it with whatever you want or just eat it right out of the oven.  Peeta is so yummy (the bread is good too). I know that this has nothing to do with The Hunger Games but it was for fun purposes only.

(Note: I got this recipe from the book Bread Machine by Jennie Shapter but with a few modifications of my own).

Ingredients:

  • 1 ¼ cup of warm water
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil
  • 3 cups of flour
  • 1 ½ tsp salt
  • 2 tsp of sugar
  • 1 tsp of rapid-rise active dry yeast

This is what you gotta do:

  1. Make sure you have a clean surface to work on. Place the flour on the table and make a well (sort of like a flour volcano) in the middle of it.
  2. Add salt, sugar and yeast on top of the ring of flour and pour the warm water on the middle. Make circular motions with your hands on the water and start to incorporate the flour little by little.
  3. Bring the dough together and add the olive oil at last so it can seal all the ingredients. Keep kneading the dough by hand for 15 min nonstop or go the easy –lazy way like me and use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 10 min.
  4. Let it rest for about 20-30 min. and after that make little balls of about the size of a tennis ball. Preheat your oven to 450°F.
  5. Extend the dough pieces into a circle with a rolling pin with ¼ inch in thickness and place them in a greased baking tray.
  6. Now, into the oven they go for about 5-10 min and watch them rise before your very eyes. Take them out, open them and stuff them with whatever you please.
